Barley (Whole)


Barley is grown for both malting purposes and for use in animal feeds.

Nutritional Benefits

Barley is high in energy, but low in protein. The high starch level promotes efficient rumen conversion of nitrogen from the grass into milk protein. Barley would be ideally used around peak lactation to complement the high amounts of crude protein going into the diet from pasture.

Feeding Recommendations

Slow introduction to barley feeding needs to take place as it can cause acidosis. This is best done by slowly increasing the ration per cow per day up by small increments of approximately 0.5 kg DM.
